She had spreadsheets for everything except …
Nez has a spreadsheet for everything. For twenty-six years she ran complex government programs while she and her husband, Gery, saved for one dream: retire early and sail the seven seas. On their catamaran, Spud, he is the Captain, a lifelong professional sailor. She is the first mate with a laminated rules card, a binder of documents, and a hen she never wanted. And a woman who was always the most prepared person in the room suddenly feels like a summer intern.
Then the life she planned ends without warning, far from home. The sensible move is to get Spud to a better market and sell her. So Nez hires captains, fixes what breaks, and plans one more passage at a time, from Jamaica through the Panama Canal to Costa Rica. Along the way a fleet of strangers becomes her crew: a mother who captains her own boat with three kids and a labrador, two veterans whose party boat became a sailing channel, a Croatian couple on their third trip around the world, a Russian who can fix anything, and a gruff old salt whose parrot has opinions about her winch work.
Then a buyer wants to rip out Spud’s mast and turn her into a party boat for his fishing buddies, and Nez faces a choice no spreadsheet can answer: is she still the first mate, or ready to be the captain? Somewhere between Costa Rica and Tahiti, a distress call asks her to turn back.
The Singular Voyage of a Woman and Her Chicken is a warm, wry novel about reinvention, found family, and finding out what you can do when no one else is at the helm.
