  • 2nd Fish: 18 lb, 40″ Mahi-Mahi!

    2nd Fish: 18 lb, 40″ Mahi-Mahi!

The Fishing Pole Broke! So this fish definitely was a fighter! I tried to reel her in, but got a bit tired and Don took over. She pulled so hard that the wheel mechanism pulled off the rod. Now it was my turn to wield the knife and fillet my fish. It looked so good, we only let it sit 30 min. in the marinade… With two 18 lbers under our belts, we now have a pattern. We freeze most of the fillets but reserve for Day 1: sushi with fresh wasabi and Day 2: ceviche. This time I had…

  • It Twasn’t a Difficult Adjustment from the Bahamas to the US Due to Charleston’s Charms

It Twasn’t a Difficult Adjustment from the Bahamas to the US Due to Charleston’s Charms

Dance, Music, Opera, Blues, History & Architecture It’s not that Charleston doesn’t have it charms on a day to day basis, but combining these charms with the Spoleto  USA Festival of dance, drama, opera, and music and we were thrilled.  While we loved the Bahamas for its beautiful waters and active cruising community, it is good to be back in the ol’ USA! We attended “Flying Lovers of Vitesk”–a musical about Marc Chagall and his muse and wife, “Backbone” acrobatics performance, blues performance by local musician, “Pas de Deux” in honor of Jerome Robins, a gospel spiritual service including songs…

  • Our first fish! A black fin tuna

Our first fish! A black fin tuna

Fresh bait made all the difference What can I say. I was feeling a little competitive. All these folks have been catching fish all season, and we had not. We tried a variety of lures but it turns out, that fresh bait in the form of squid is the bomb! Off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, we put out our fishing rod that we purchased secondhand at an SSCA GAM nautical flea market. Play squid bait on one of the cedar plugs, had our big fishnet at the ready and filet knife. After a few hours, we heard the comforting…

  • Rolling home, rolling home, rolling home across the sea

Crossing tonight! It was a great run, these past 6 months in the Bahamas. Wow, does time fly! After being bitten by no-see-em’s all night in Allans-Pencicola, we are staging in Great Sale Cay and depart in the next hour. Emergency gear is out and ready, healthy snacks & easy to grab food is prepped, our watch cycle agreed on (I like the mid-night run), float plan filed with USCG Small Vessal Reporting System (SVRS), routing and map softwares updated. We plan to use the new Customs & Border Control smart phone app (ROAM) to check in via video conference!…

  • Microgreens Experiment

    Microgreens Experiment

Day Five The wally pocket is handily beating the plain tub. Day One Thanks to Karen Massey on Snowcat II, I finally decided to take the microgreen seeds she generously shared with us and experiment with them. I have put them in two different environments. One, a WallyGro wall planterthat I purchased some time ago. Searching for information on how to use it, I realize they’ve been bought out by Patagonia which is really really cool! The second, is just a regular tub. Both are using dirt we received from Emily on S/V Temptress in Georgetown after loaning them our…
